Top Hot and Cold Lotto Numbers Guide 2025

A hot number is one that has come up often in recent draws. A cold number is one that has not. Results pages and number tools publish these lists for most big lotteries, and plenty of players use them to choose lines.

The lists describe the past correctly. They do not predict the next draw. The balls have no memory: each draw starts from a full, checked set, so every number has the same chance as every other, and every combination has the same chance as every other combination.

This guide shows what frequency charts can and cannot tell you, why a number looks hot or cold by pure chance, and what actually changes your odds of a jackpot.

  • No number is due, and no number is on a streak
  • A hot or cold line has the same jackpot odds as any other line
  • Only more lines, or a different lottery, change your chance

What a 6/49 line is up against

Jackpot odds for Lotto 6/49 by number of different lines in one draw. A line built from hot or cold numbers sits in the same row as any other line.

Lotto 6/49 draws 6 numbers from 49, so there are 13,983,816 possible lines and one of them wins the jackpot. Picking hot numbers, cold numbers or a mix of both still leaves you holding one of those lines, with the same 1 in 13,983,816 chance as a line chosen any other way.

  1. 1 line 1 in 13,983,816
  2. 10 lines 1 in 1,398,382
  3. 50 lines 1 in 279,676
  4. 100 lines 1 in 139,838
  5. 500 lines 1 in 27,968
Lines Group odds of the jackpot Against one line
1 line 1 in 13,983,816 1× as likely
10 lines 1 in 1,398,382 10× as likely
50 lines 1 in 279,676 50× as likely
100 lines 1 in 139,838 100× as likely
500 lines 1 in 27,968 500× as likely

One Lotto 6/49 line has jackpot odds of 1 in 13,983,816. Different lines add their chances; a shared prize is split by share.

Panel Why it looks real

Why hot and cold lists feel meaningful

Small samples swing

Over 10 or 50 draws some numbers will come up far more often than average and some not at all. That spread is what randomness looks like, not a sign that the machine prefers certain balls.

Shares even out, counts do not

Over thousands of draws each number's share drifts toward the average. That happens because new draws swamp the old ones, not because cold numbers catch up.

The gambler's fallacy

Expecting a cold number to be due, or a hot one to keep coming, treats the draw as if it remembers. A coin that has landed heads five times in a row still has a 1 in 2 chance of heads on the next toss.

Checked equipment

Draw machines and ball sets are weighed, tested and audited before draws so that no ball is favoured. A frequency chart cannot find a bias the checks are built to remove.

Panel If you use the charts

Using hot and cold lists without fooling yourself

  1. Use them for fun, not for odds

Choosing from a hot list is as good a way to pick a line as any other, and no better.

    Fine to do
  2. Avoid the most popular patterns

Birthdays, numbers up to 31 and straight runs are picked by many players. Avoiding them can mean fewer people to share a jackpot with if you win. It does not raise the chance of winning.

    Fine to do
  3. Set the spend first

Decide what a month of tickets may cost before you choose any numbers, and keep to it.

    Fine to do
  4. Check results at the source

Compare your lines with the official draw results, not with a number tool's summary of them.

Panel Questions

Hot and cold numbers: questions

Are hot numbers more likely to be drawn?

No. A hot number has been drawn often in the past, and that is all the label means. In the next draw it has exactly the same chance as every other number in the pool.

Is a cold number due to come up?

No. The draw does not keep count. A number that has not appeared for months has the same chance in the next draw as one drawn last week. Believing otherwise is the gambler's fallacy.

Does mixing hot and cold numbers help?

No. Any mix of numbers is still one line, and every line has the same odds. For Lotto 6/49 that is 1 in 13,983,816 per line, however the numbers were chosen.

Where do hot and cold lists come from?

They are counts of past results over a chosen window, such as the last 50 or 100 draws. Change the window and the lists change, which is a sign they describe noise. You can look up past numbers on our results pages.

What does change my chance of a jackpot?

Two things: how many different lines you hold in a draw, and which lottery you play. Ten different lines are ten times as likely to win as one, and cost ten times as much. Our lotto odds guide compares the big draws.

Can I avoid sharing a jackpot?

You can make it less likely. Many players choose dates, so lines made mostly of numbers above 31 tend to be held by fewer people. That changes how a prize might be split, not how likely you are to win it. More in our lottery strategies guide.

Set the spend before you pick the numbers.

Most lottery lines win nothing. Decide a monthly amount you can lose, and use the deposit limits on the site you play at.
